Taxi in Sofia

All official taxis are yellow and have obvious taxi signs (in English or Bulgarian) on top.

In key places like Sofia Airport, Central Railway Station, Palace of Justice, etc. there are taxi ranks. You can also hail a taxi from the street by just waving your hand at an approaching taxi-car. If a taxi's light indicator is green then the taxi is free. If it's is red then it is busy.

The safest way to hail a taxi in Sofia is to order one via phone, internet or apps.

Taxi rates

The average starting fare is around 0,70 levs or 0,35 euro. During the daytime, the average fare per kilometer is 0,80 levs or 0,40 euros and shouldn’t be more than 1.30 levs or 0.65 euros. During the nighttime, the average fare per kilometer is 0,90 levs or 0,45 euros and shouldn’t be more than 1.60 levs or 0.80 euros. The average waiting fare per minute is 0,22 levs or 0,11 euros. Day tariff applies from 06:00 until 22:00 hours and night tariff - from 22:00 until 06:00 hours.

The taxis in Sofia are required to show their fares on the front and side windows. Always check the prices before you enter the car.

How to avoid taxi scam in Sofia

Do not trust people in the at the airport or the rail station asking you if you need a taxi.
Do not enter into a car not marked as a taxi.
Always check the fares before getting in the taxi.
Make sure the driver has turned the taximeter on.
Keep your eyes on the taximeter.
If something does not seem okay with the taximeter or if it’s counting too quickly it’s best to stop the taxi and get out.
