Sofia Celebrates 125 Years of Tram Transport with Free Vintage Tram Rides

News

On 14 January 2026, Sofia will mark 125 years since the launch of its tramway system with a special event that brings history to life in the heart of the city. Both residents and visitors are invited to enjoy free rides on beautifully restored vintage trams, offering a unique way to experience Sofia’s past while exploring its central streets.

Travel Through Time on Historic Trams

As part of the anniversary celebrations, historic trams from different eras will operate along a specially designed attraction route in central Sofia. Passengers will be able not only to ride the trams free of charge, but also to view them up close, take photographs, and explore their interiors while they are on display at Vazrazhdane Square.

Among the highlights is tram car No. 701, an iconic model from the 1980s that has been fully restored and will return to the tracks especially for this occasion. It will be joined by other historic tram cars, illustrating how Sofia’s public transport has evolved over the decades.
