The initiative to rename the country’s busiest international airport was first proposed in 2017 by scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). The idea received widespread public and institutional support over the years. In late 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications formally endorsed the proposal, paving the way for its implementation.

Vasil Levski is widely regarded as one of Bulgaria’s most significant historical figures, celebrated for his role in the country’s fight for liberation. By renaming the airport in his honor, Bulgaria pays tribute to his enduring legacy and national pride.

Passengers traveling through Vasil Levski Sofia Airport will soon see updates across signage, flight tickets, and official documentation, reflecting the new name. The rebranding is expected to enhance Sofia’s cultural identity while honoring one of Bulgaria’s most revered heroes.
