Sofia Airport Launches New Baggage System

The new baggage handling system has been developed using technology from French company Alstef and US-based Leidos. Its introduction marks another important step in the ongoing modernization and technological development of Bulgaria’s main international airport.

One of the most significant improvements is the substantial increase in baggage processing capacity. The new system can handle up to 3,200 checked bags per hour, compared with the previous capacity of around 400 bags per hour.

The upgrade is also designed with Sofia Airport’s future expansion in mind. Following the planned construction of Terminal 3 by 2031 and the modernization of Terminal 2, the airport is expected to reach an annual capacity of up to 20 million passengers.

For travellers, the new technology should contribute to smoother and more reliable baggage processing, particularly during busy travel periods. It is also expected to improve the efficiency of ground handling operations and support airlines in managing growing passenger numbers.

The investment forms part of the wider transformation of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport as it prepares for increased international traffic and the future growth of Sofia as a European travel destination.
